“What Colour Do I Paint My Room?”

Ok, be honest; do you reach for a paint chart as soon as you decide you want to redecorate?

I want you to step away from the paint chart, here’s why…..

Starting your room design with a colour choice can be an expensive mistake!

Every project I undertake begins with a vision or mood board. They are an essential part of the design process because they enable you to fully flex your creativity and personal style.

Empty Rooms are Overwhelming!

A blank canvas is full of potential but where do you start and how to you avoid costly mistakes?

A vision or mood board is THE perfect place to experiment with ideas, colours, patterns, textures and furniture.

It WILL help save time and money, and keep your vision in focus.

It can be easy to get overwhelmed by choice in these early stages of design so don’t worry about sourcing exact products or your budget yet.

At this stage, it's all about capturing the mood and style you want and letting your creative juices flow.

Do you have bursting pinterest boards? Start by reviewing the images you saved and really considering what you like about them. Is it the light, the use of colour or the textures. By spending this time exploring you will start to gain information about what to include in your design.

Really focus on what you'll be doing in the room but also how you want the room to feel. Calming or invigorating? Traditional or edgy? Welcoming or transistionary?

Let your instincts guide you, trust them! It is important to not restrict yourself to interiors images; in fact I deliberately try not too (it can be distracting) so look for abstract images, use a section of a photo or turn to fashion (look in your wardrobe!) nature, art and the buildings around you.

Continue to collect and edit until it feels right. If you aren’t sure if it is finished, pop it away for a few days and then come back to it with fresh eyes. Once complete your beautiful visual resource will guide you to make your future design decisions.

Taking a picture of your finished board is an excellent idea as it provides you with a reference when you are out and about to assess products against your vision to see if they will work.

I’d love to hear your tips and ideas for creating a mood board, send them through to me via email hello@beckyharrisondesigns or on instagram @beckyharrisondesigns

Happy moodboarding!
